25 Christmas Crafts You Can Make Using Home Made Salt Dough

November 10, by Shellie Wilson. Leave a Comment

Christmas time is all about baking and hot cookies straight out of the oven for me, so It is no wonder that I love working with salt dough this time of year. The cinnamon dough has to be my favorite, but I also love making salt dough and adding some holiday Christmas fragrant scents to it. If you are adding fragrance, make sure it is either after handling and creating the dough, or wear gloves to protect your skin from fragrant oil.

Salt dough is an inexpensive craft medium and it is great when you are making things in bulk for Sunday church groups or in the classroom.

If you are looking for an airdrying clay as an alternative I highly recommend Das Airdrying white clay  I have been using it for over 30 years and it never fails me.

Salt dough is easy to make and can be made up in bulk and stored in an airtight container.

1 cup salt
2 cup of flour
1 cup water

Mix all ingredients together.

You do not need to make salt dough play complicated, you can create simple hangup Christmas trinkets for younger children using rolling pins (to flatten out the dough) and Christmas Cookie Cutters.  If painting is not an option then color your dough first with food coloring.

Salt dough is made from a simple mixture of flour, salt, and water, and it’s an inexpensive and non-toxic material that is safe for kids to use. Here is a basic recipe for salt dough:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1 cup of water

Mix all ingredients together until it forms a smooth dough. You can add food coloring or essential oils to add a nice aroma to the dough.

When working with salt dough, it’s important to keep in mind that it can be fragile when it’s first made, so it’s best to let it dry thoroughly before painting or decorating. Additionally, It’s best to work with a small amount at a time and keep the rest of the dough wrapped in plastic wrap to prevent it from drying out.

Salt dough is a great medium for kids to work with because it’s easy to mold and shape, and once it’s dry, it can be painted and decorated in a variety of ways. With a little creativity and some basic tools, you can make all kinds of fun and festive crafts using salt dough.
