Keeping kids busy come winter months can be tough. When it’s too cold to be outside for more than a couple of minutes my kids can quickly get stir crazy. They have an overabundance of toys but playing with them day in and day out can get kind of boring. Sure, there are plenty of indoor things I can take them to do but, the cost of those adds up really fast. Here are some ideas you can do at home to keep your kids entertained:
Bake
There is something about the winter months that put me in a baking mood. Now that they are a bit older, my kids love to join me too. Many times I have to simplify the recipe so that they can help me without me loosing my mind but, they love to help out so it is worth it. Another thing I do to make it easier is pre-measure things so all they have to do is dump the ingredients in. Not only do we get some yummy snacks out of the deal but, we make some awesome memories for them to look back on too!
Board Games
Board games seem to be slowly making a comeback with “game nights” but, why not pull them out at other times. My kids love spending an afternoon playing games of their choice when it is too cold out to be outside. Even if the games aren’t played exactly as the rules say: that is okay. The most important things when it comes to playing games with my kids are the memories I make with them. Sure, I try to make sure we are playing with some form of rules but, sometimes they are too small to follow the exact rules. Don’t be afraid to modify them for what works for you and your kids.
Coloring
Sometimes, it is hard to remember to slow down and appreciate the simple things. When I get too busy, my daughter brings out her colored pencils and a coloring book and asks me if I want to color with her. Typically my brain is racing with other things but, I have made it a point to stop and spend that time with her. We even make it an afternoon activity on our lazier days.
Art Projects
With so many Holidays falling in the winter months, it is the perfect time to do some art projects. We love to do Holiday themed projects to decorate our home. There are so many art project options out there that you are able to find something that fits the needs of everyone involved.
Just Play
Invite yourself into their world and get on the floor and play with them. Let them lead the free play and decide what to play. I guarantee that the memories that are made with them leading the play will be something they look back on for quite some time.
Active Games
You can do something as simple as “Simon Says” or, you can look up movement games online. There are ideas as easy as cutting out shapes and having your toddlers jump on them to, turning your hallway into a spider web and the kids have to crawl through it. These games will help release some of their built up energy.
