Coffee Filter Flowers
August 6, 2007 |
It only makes sense that my inaugural post mentions my favorite crafting TV show and one of their projects. Creative Juice on DIY and HGTV, hosted by Cathie Filian and Steve Piacenza, never fails to amaze and inspire me. Their projects are gorgeous yet simple, practical yet thrifty. Most of their projects and crafts are not expensive - in fact, many of them use recycled materials - but that’s never the focus of the project. Rather, it’s all in how they explain things and how professional-looking (but not necessarily absolutely perfect, so you can relax!) everything comes out in the end. It’s a perfect treat to TiVo it and watch it at the end of a long day filled with sticky suckers, dirty dishes and carpools. Plus, their ideas for kids and adults alike are inspirational.
Case in point: their coffee-filter flowers. It’s the perfect project for toddlers and teens alike, since the results can be so unique and varied, depending on the time and materials invested. If your preschooler is likely to want to immerse himself in the dye bath, as my son probably would, how about using tissue paper instead of dyeing your own coffee filters? You could use a scrapbooking template to cut out the circles, or just wing it and cut them out by hand for a natural and more rustic look. And teenagers can add jeweled centers, sequins, or rhinestones and make enough blossoms to decorate an entire wall of their bedroom. The possibilities for unique style are endless. And it’s a perfect outdoor project, which is especially nice, given that it’s supposed to be over 100 degrees every day here this week. I think we’re going to set up the kiddie pool, get our supplies out, let everyone dye their flowers, and then toss the kids in the pool for some cooling off (and washing off!).
